Project in brief

St Peter & St James Hospice (STPJ) provides expert care to adults living with a life-limiting illness across Sussex, and also provides support to friends and relatives. The Hospice supports people to live and die well, according to what matters most to them. Their mission is to provide the best possible care, in the right place, at the right time, to everyone who needs it. We worked with St Peter & St James Hospice in 2022 to redesign their website, improve the user journey and better portray the important work they carry out.

The previous Hospice website was built from the perspective of different departments within the organisation. This led to a slightly cumbersome, difficult to navigate menu structure, with key information often difficult to find. There was very limited crosslinking, and so users weren’t directed to further information that could be of use. The new website, therefore, needed to be built with each of the separate target audiences in mind; Patients, Family & Friends, Supporters and Professionals, but also with enhanced crosslinking to encourage these audiences to visit additional sections of the website.

The new website was to be easily customisable, designed around STPJ’s updated brand guidelines and make better use of Google Analytics to track conversions and the flow of visitors through the website. The website also needed to be built to facilitate the use of dynamic content, such as video.

Before working on visuals for the website and following a detailed face-to-face kick off meeting with key stakeholders, we collaborated with the Hospice marketing team to devise a new hierarchy for the website menu, with clearer signposting for key content, removal of any duplication and a general simplification of the structure. This was vital in ensuring the right people were directed to the right information quickly, and that all users could easily access everything that they need with a minimal number of clicks. An additional focus was directing users to the core elements of the website, which previously were underused and under-visited.

Highlighting impact

We designed detailed wireframes for the homepage and key section pages, prioritising simple access to key information, better utilisation of the charity’s heart motif and calls to action to encourage user engagement. We brought case studies to the fore, helping visitors to really understand the impact of the work the hospice undertakes.

Once these designs were approved by key stakeholders, we built the website, with regular check-ins with the team to ensure we met key deadlines and benchmarks. This clear communication allowed our main point of contact at the Hospice to manage stakeholder approval, as well as to undertake a rigorous internal testing program to iron out any teething problems before launch.

The final website is dynamic, informative and easy to use, reflecting the core values of the Hospice and providing a hub for patients, families, health professionals and members of the public. It provides a much-improved user experience for visitors.
